Title C^0 limits of Hamiltonian paths and spectral invariants
Speaker, Affiliation Sobhan Seyfaddini, ENS Paris, France
Date, Time 5 November 2012, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract After briefly reviewing spectral invariants, I will write down an estimate, which under certain assumptions, relates the spectral invariants of a Hamiltonian to the C^0-distance of its flow from the identity. Time permitting I will present a few applications to Hofer geometry.

Title Counting Toric Actions
Speaker, Affiliation Yael Karshon, University of Toronto
Date, Time 19 November 2012, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract In how many different ways can a two-torus act on a given simply connected symplectic four-manifold? It is known that number of inequivalent torus actions is finite, but the (``soft") proof of this fact does not give this number. Together with Liat Kessler and Martin Pinsonnault, we reduce this counting question to combinatorics by expressing the manifold as a symplectic blowup in a way that is compatible with all the torus actions simultaneously. This uses the theory of pseudoholomorphic curves.

Abstract Does the universal cover of the contactomorphism group of a contact manifold admit an unbounded conjugation-invariant norm? I'll discuss a construction and an obstruction. Joint work with Maia Fraser and Daniel Rosen.
