Title Some results and questions about virtual cycles for stable maps
Speaker, Affiliation Prof. Dr. Rahul Pandharipande, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Date, Time 3 October 2011, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract I will discuss some results, conjectures, and hopes for the behavior of the virtual cycle for stable maps. Some are for algebraic varieties, some for symplectic manifolds. Topics will include tautological classes, degeneration formulas, and the puzzling form of the Virasoro constraints.

Speaker, Affiliation Sheila Margherita Sandon, Nantes
Date, Time 10 October 2011, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract A point p in a contact manifold is called a translated point for a contactomorphism \phi with respect to a fixed contact form if p and \phi(p) belong to the same Reeb orbit and if the contact form is preserved at p. In my talk I will discuss a version of the Arnold conjecture for translated points of contactomorphisms, and indicate how to prove it in the case of spheres and projective spaces.

Title Kähler groups, real hyperbolic spaces and the Cremona group
Speaker, Affiliation Pierre Py, Strasbourg

Abstract Starting from a classical theorem of Carlson and Toledo, we will discuss actions of fundamental groups of compact Kähler manifolds on finite or infinite dimensional real hyperbolic spaces. We will see that such actions almost always (but not always) come from surface groups. We then give an application to the study of the Cremona group. This is a joint work with Thomas Delzant.

Title A Necessary Condition for Hamiltonian Circle Actions with Isolated Fixed Points
Speaker, Affiliation Silvia Sabatini, EPFL

Abstract For every compact symplectic manifold M with a Hamiltonian circle action and isolated fixed points, a simple algebraic identity involving the first Chern class is derived. When the manifold satisfies an extra "positivity condition", this enables us to construct an algorithm to obtain linear relations among the isotropy weights at the fixed points. If dim(M) is less than or equal to 6 and the number of fixed points is minimal, this algorithm quickly determines all the possible families of isotropy weights, simplifying the proofs due to Ahara and Tolman. In this case all the possible equivariant cohomology rings and Chern classes are determined. Joint work with Leonor Godinho, IST

Title Quasi-isometric embeddings into diffeomorphism groups
Speaker, Affiliation Jarek Kedra, Aberdeen

Abstract I will discuss the L^p metrics on diffeomorphism groups of smooth manifolds. It is known that such metrics are bounded for compact and simply connected manifolds. Assuming a suitable nontriviality of the fundamental group of a manifold M, I will construct quasi-isometric embeddings of products of free groups into Diff(M,vol). This is a joint work with Michael Brandenbursky: http://arxiv.org/abs/1108.5126

Title Computing descendants in SFT and stable hypersurfaces in symplectic blow-ups
Speaker, Affiliation Oliver Fabert, Freiburg
Date, Time 7 November 2011, 15:15-16:30

Abstract After introducing gravitational descendants, symplectic field theory (SFT) assigns to each symplectomorphism an infinite number of commuting Hamiltonians, which in the Hamiltonian case leads to the well-known integrable hierarchies of GW theory. While the completeness proof from GW theory uses that descendants can be computed from invariants without descendants, in this talk I show that this is no longer true in SFT. After proving that one additionally has to count holomorphic curves with simple tangencies and giving the desired reconstruction formula, in a local version I show that the richer descendant invariants can be used to prove that exceptional spheres cannot break along hyperbolic orbits. This is partly joint work with Paolo Rossi.

Title Fukaya category of the punctured torus
Speaker, Affiliation Yanki Lekili, Cambridge
Date, Time 12 December 2011, 15:15-16:30

Abstract In joint work with Tim Perutz, we give a complete characterization of the exact Fukaya category of the punctured torus, denoted by Fuk(T_0). This, in particular, means that one can write down an explicit minimal model for Fuk(T_0) in the form of an A-infinity algebra, denoted by A, and classify A-infinity structures on the relevant algebra. A result that we will discuss is that no associative algebra is quasi-equivalent to the model A of the Fukaya category of the punctured torus, i.e., A is non-formal. We will then deduce that Fuk(T_0) is derived equivalent to the category of perfect complexes on an irreducible rational curve with a double point, an instance of homological mirror symmetry.
