Title C^0 symplectic geometry of smooth submanifolds
Speaker, Affiliation Lev Buhovsky, Tel-Aviv University, Israel
Date, Time 6 October 2014, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract I will talk about a recent study of rigidity and flexibility of smooth submanifolds under the action of symplectic homeomorphisms, formulating some new results and questions. This study is a natural continuation of previous works of Emmanuel Opshtein, and of Vincent Humilière, Rémi Leclercq, and Sobhan Seyfaddini. My talk will be based on a joint work with Emmanuel Opshtein.

Abstract I will discuss a certain symplectic flexibility result concerning the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian. Previous results in this direction were obtained by Leonid Polterovich, and by Dan Mangoubi.

Title Periodic orbits of exact magnetic flows on surfaces
Speaker, Affiliation Marco Mazzucchelli, ENS Lyon, France
Date, Time 27 October 2014, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract This talk is about periodic obits of exact magnetic flows on the cotangent bundle of closed surfaces. The dynamics of these Hamiltonian systems on high energy levels is well known: it is conjugated to a Reeb flow, and actually to a Finsler geodesic flow. In this talk, I will focus on low energies, more precisely on energies below the so-called Mañé critical value of the universal covering. After introducing the setting, I will present a recent result asserting the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits on almost all energy levels in this range. This is a joint work with A. Abbondandolo, L. Macarini, and G. P. Paternain.

Title Orderability and the Weinstein Conjecture
Speaker, Affiliation Will Merry, ETH Zürich
Date, Time 24 November 2014, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract Joint work with Peter Albers and Urs Fuchs. In 2000 Eliashberg-Polterovich introduced the natural notion of orderability of contact manifolds; that is, the (non)existence of positive loops of contactomorphisms. I will explain how one can study orderability questions using the machinery of Rabinowitz Floer homology. We establish a link between orderable and hypertight contact manifolds, and show that the Weinstein Conjecture holds (i.e. there exists a closed Reeb orbit) whenever there exists a positive (not necessarily contractible) loop of contactomorphisms.

Title A reverse isoperimetric inequality for J-holomorphic curves
Speaker, Affiliation Jake Solomon, Hebrew University, Israel
Date, Time 8 December 2014, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract The length of the boundary of a J-holomorphic curve with Lagrangian boundary conditions is dominated by a constant times its area. This inequality is useful for showing the adic convergence of power series arising from A-infinity algebras associated with Lagrangian submanifolds. It gives rise to an invariant of Lagrangian submanifolds called the optimal isoperimetric constant. And it proves the compactness of certain moduli of J-holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary conditions in toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. This is joint work with Y. Groman.
