Symplectic Geometry Seminar

Title Contact Submanifolds in Higher Dimensions
Speaker, Affiliation Roger Casals, UC Davis
Date, Time 1 April 2019, 15:15-16:30
Location HG G 43
Abstract I will discuss new progress in the study of contact submanifolds in all dimensions. I will present, in any dimension, the first construction of contactomorphic smoothly isotopic contact submanifolds which are not contact isotopic. This will prove rigidity for contact submanifolds, which resolves one of the main questions we had in higher dimensions. The talk will feature the parallels, and non-parallels, with symplectic geometry, where the rigidity problem is still open. In the end, I will discuss works in progress and lines of future development in the study of contact and symplectic submanifolds. This talk is partially based on my work with J. Etnyre.

Speaker, Affiliation Ailsa Keating, Cambridge University
Date, Time 15 April 2019, 15:15-16:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract We explain some methods for constructing collections of monotone Lagrangians in some families of affine hypersurfaces; these give, for instance, infinite collections of monotone Lagrangian in $\mathbb{C}^3$. We will explain different strategies for telling them apart, including using holomorphic curve invariants. Partially based on joint work with Mohammed Abouzaid.

Abstract Hamiltonian homeomorphisms are those homeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold which can be written as uniform limits of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. One difficulty in studying Hamiltonian homeomorphisms (particularly in dimensions greater than two) has been that we possess fewer tools for studying them. For example, (filtered) Floer homology, which has been a very effective tool for studying Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, is not well-defined for homeomorphisms. We will show in this talk that using barcodes and persistence homology one can indirectly define (filtered) Floer homology for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms. This talk is based on joint projects with Buhovsky-Humiliére and Le Roux Viterbo.

Abstract We will prove a non-squeezing result for Lagrangian embeddings of the real projective plane into blow-ups of the symplectic ball, namely the three-fold blow-up admits such an embedding iff the sum of the sizes of any two blow-ups is greater than the size of the remaining blow-up.

Title Some manifolds with infinitely many fillable contact structures
Speaker, Affiliation Alexander Fauck, Humboldt-Universität Berlin
Date, Time 20 May 2019, 15:15-16:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract By a famous result of I. Ustilovsky we know that the standard spheres of dimension at least 5 there carry infinitely many different fillable contact structures. In my talk, I will discuss how to extend this result to other differentiable manifolds, in particular manifolds which admit a periodic Reeb flow and connected sums of such manifolds.
