Abstract	We give a broad view to Newton type method and its various versions including those for variational inequalities and optimization problems. Cornerstones in the developments such as Kantorovich theorem, Josephy method and Dennis-More theorem are put in perspective to more recent development such as semismooth Newton-type methods. An application to Model Predictive Control is also displayed.
