Title Spectral sequences to the rescue
Speaker, Affiliation Prof. Dr. Emmanuel Kowalski, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Date, Time 25 October 2013, 14:15-15:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract (joint with E. Fouvry and Ph. Michel) We will present some questions involving families of exponential sums, partly motivated by the current improvement from the Polymath8 project to Zhang's bounds on gaps between prime numbers. These lead naturally to problems of algebraic geometry over finite fields, and in particular to considerations where spectral sequences are used to replace the classical technique of exchange of sums in analytic number theory.

Title Mock Modular Forms in Umbral Moonshine
Speaker, Affiliation Dr. Miranda Cheng, Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu
Date, Time 1 November 2013, 14:15-15:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract Recently, a new type of moonshine has been discovered relating finite groups obtained from Niemeier lattices and a set of mock modular forms, including many of the mock theta series of Ramanujan. In this talk I will describe this "umbral moonshine" and explain the construction of the mock modular forms involved. This talk will be based on work with J Duncan and J Harvey.

Title Differential operators on Siegel modular forms and various applications
Speaker, Affiliation Prof. Dr. Tomoyoshi Ibukiyama, Osaka University, Japan
Date, Time 8 November 2013, 14:15-15:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract After giving a general theory of differential operators on holomorphic Siegel modular forms which behaves well under the restriction of the domain, I will give a quick survey on what can be done by using such operators, including 1) Construction of Siegel modular forms or Jacobi forms of higher degree and determination of their structures. 2) Explicit calculations of the critical values of L functions 3) Theory of special functions such as orthogonal polynomials and new holonomic systems.

Title Hypergeometric Motives
Speaker, Affiliation Prof. Dr. Fernando Rodriguez Villegas, University of Texas at Austin
Date, Time 15 November 2013, 14:15-15:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract I will discuss how the motives of the title give rise to a whole class of computable L-functions with a wide range of parameter values (conductor, rank, Hodge type, etc.). These one parameter families of motives are defined by very simple data corresponding to a classical hypergeometric differential equation (of Gauss, Riemann, etc. in rank two). This work is joint with a team of collaborators.

Speaker, Affiliation Prof. Dr. Olav Richter, University of North Texas, USA
Date, Time 22 November 2013, 14:15-15:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract I will report on recent joint work with Martin Raum on congruences of Siegel modular forms. Specifically, I will discuss the ring structure of Siegel modular forms of degree g modulo a prime p, and I will present a characterization of U(p)-congruences of Siegel modular forms.

Title Counting cusp forms by analytic conductor
Speaker, Affiliation Dr. Farrell Brumley, Université Paris 13
Date, Time 29 November 2013, 14:15-15:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract Given a reductive group over a global field, a natural question is to count the number of cuspidal automorphic representations of bounded analytic conductor. The set-up is highly reminiscent of counting rational points of bounded height on certain algebraic varieties. We'll discuss a proper formulation of the automorphic problem and present a few recent results, obtained in collaboration with Djordje Milicevic, for general linear groups and certain orthogonal groups.

Title Cohomology of local systems on the moduli of principally polarized abelian surfaces
Speaker, Affiliation Dr. Dan Petersen, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Date, Time 6 December 2013, 14:15-15:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract Let A_2 be the moduli space of principally polarized abelian surfaces. To any irreducible representation of Sp(4) one may attach a local system on A_2. I will report on recent work in which I determined the l-adic cohomology of these local systems in arbitrary degree. This has applications to the study of Siegel modular forms and to moduli of curves.

Title On higher regulators of siegel threefolds: the vanishing on the boundary
Speaker, Affiliation Dr. Francesco Lemma, Université Paris 7; Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu
Date, Time 13 December 2013, 14:15-15:15
Location HG G 43
Abstract I will present the construction of extensions of mixed Hodge structures in the image of Beilinson's regulator, which are conjecturally related to non-critical values of the degree four L-function of some automorphic representations of GSp(4). The key ingredient of the proof is the computation of higher direct images of variation of Hodge structure on the boundary strata of the minimal compactifications of the considered Shimura varieties.
