Research interests and preprints

I work in the area of symplectic topology. I am particularly interested in symplectomorphism groups and Lagrangian submanifolds. I am currently thinking about monotone Lagrangian submanifolds and the Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic nilmanifolds.

J. D. Evans and J. Kędra, Remarks on monotone Lagrangians in Cn, arXiv:1110.0927, submitted October 2011

J. D. Evans, Quantum cohomology of twistor spaces and their Lagrangian submanifolds, arXiv:1106.3959, submitted June 2011

J. D. Evans, The infimum of the Nijenhuis energy, arXiv:1109.4854, to appear in Mathematics Research Letters

J. D. Evans, Symplectic mapping class groups of some Stein and rational surfaces, Journal of Symplectic Geometry 2011 9(1):45-82 or arXiv:0909.5622

Teaching

I gave the following graduate-level courses at ETH Zürich

  • Herbstsemester 2010: A first course in symplectic topology (fourteen 1.5-hour lectures, notes available)
  • Herbstsemester 2011: Aspects of Yang-Mills theory (twenty four 45-minute lectures, notes available)

I gave supervisions for the following subjects in the University of Cambridge Mathematical Tripos (attendant revision supervisions in Easter term are omitted):

  • Michaelmas 2009: 1st year Group Theory
  • Lent 2009: 2nd year Complex Analysis
  • Michaelmas 2008: 1st year Group Theory

  • Michaelmas 2007: 1st year Group Theory
  • Lent 2007: 2nd year Geometry
  • Michaelmas 2006: 3rd year Algebraic Topology

I organised the following graduate-level seminar series:

  • ETH Milnorthon parts I and II (11th and 18th March 2011)

Academic activities

Acted as referee for: Asian Journal of Mathematics, Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, Memoirs of the AMS.

Reviewed for MathSciNet.

Assisted Dr Jarek Kedra in making the successful EPSRC overseas travel grant proposal EP/I036044/1 (to further our collaboration by allowing him to visit ETH on four separate occasions between May 2011 and May 2012 and also the Joint Mathematical Meeting of the IMU and PMS in Łódź, September 2011) which has led to the joint papers "Monotone Lagrangians in C^n" and "Gromov-Witten theory of the Kodaira-Thurston manifold" (in preparation).
