The Magma computational algebra system is the most powerful
currently existing software for working with algebraic objects, ranging
from finite groups to algebraic groups, modular curves and many others.
The talk will present some high-level features of the program, and
explain concretely how it has been used in the context of two results:
(1) the construction of the first integral polynomial with Galois group
W(E_8); (2) the experimental study of a probabilistic invariant of
finite groups which is related to the structure of maximal subgroups and
conjugacy classes. It will also be explained how to access the program
as it is currently available within the DMATH.
