July 7, 2011 - Prof. Dr. Michael Eichmair was appointed assistant professor of mathematics by the ETH board. He is presently C. L. E. Moore instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and will join our department on February 1, 2012.
June 24, 2011 - Prof. Dr. Paul Embrechts was presented with The Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh: "In recognition of his pioneering contribution to the advancement of Actuarial Mathematics and Quantitative Risk Management"
June 7, 2011 - Prof. Dr. Demetrios Christodoulou is a recipient of the 2011 Shaw prize in mathematical sciences. The prize was awarded in equal shares to him and Richard S. Hamilton "for their highly innovative works on nonlinear partial differential equations in Lorentzian and Riemannian geometry and their applications to general relativity and topology".

May 2011 - Prof. Dr. Paul Embrechts received the Award for Excellence in Statistical Research of the University of Hasselt.
September 2010 - Prof. Dr. Robert Weismantel received the 2010 IBM Faculty Award.
In its meeting of September 30 2010 the ETH board appointed four professors at our department. Prof. Dr. Siddhartha Mishra, currently assistant professor at our department was appointed associate professor. He will take office on August 1st, 2012 at the Seminar of Applied Mathematics. Prof. Dr. Johannes Muhle-Karbe, of the University of Vienna, Prof. Dr. Damien Calaque, of the University of Lyon, and Prof. Dr. Pierre Nolin, of the Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences in New York, were appointed assistant professors.
Prof. Dr. Muhle-Karbe joined our department on October 1st, 2010, Proff. Calaque and Nolin will join on February 1st, 2011 and August 1st, 2011, respectively.
Prof. Dr. Rolf Jeltsch was conferred the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in a ceremony on November 26, 2010 in Hanoi.
March 3, 2010 - The ETH board has appointed Prof. Norbert Hungerbühler of the University of Fribourg professor of mathematics and education at ETH Zurich. He will join our department on 1 August 2010.

December 10, 2009 - The ETH board elected Prof. Robert Weismantel, currently professor for mathematical opimization at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg, as new professor in our department. He will join us in May 2010 and he will be a member of the Institute for Operations Research (IFOR).
October 20, 2009 - Professor Robert D. MacPherson, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, has received the first Heinz Hopf Price. He also delivered the Hopf Lectures 2009 "How Nature Tiles Space" on October 20 and 22.
October 7, 2009 - President Obama named Professor Rudolf Kalman, professur emeritus of our department, as recipient of the National Medal of Science for his work on the Kalman Filter.
September 2009 - Four members of our department have been selected as invited speakers at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2010 in Bangalore: Freddy Delbaen, Manfred Einsiedler, Sara van de Geer and Tom Ilmanen.
May 09, 2009 - Professor Mikhail Gromov, Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES, Bures-sur-Yvette) and Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (New York University), Winner of the Abel Prize 2009, has delivered the Pauli Lectures 2009 with the title "Geometry, Topology and Spectra of Non-Linear Spaces of Maps".
November 25, 2008 - Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Beno Eckmann died at the age of 91. He has been professor of mathematics at ETH from 1948 until his retirement in 1984. He continued his research activities at our department until shortly before his death. He has made unique contributions to the field of mathematics by his research, his teaching and by the foundation of the Institute for Mathematical Research (FIM) which he headed for 20 years. November 22, 2008 - In appreciation of essential and inspiring contribution to number theory, algebra and analysis, as well as of extensive influence on mathematics the world over, ETH Zurich awarded an honorary degree to Professor Enrico Bombieri, Institute of Advanced Studies, Princeton, USA. On November 24 Professor Bombieri gave a lecture for the general public on "The mathematical truth" [Slides: PDF, 6.1 MB].
