Mathematics is a key technology for industry. (Industry interpreted in the broadest sense, including any activity of economic and/or social value.) The panel will present a report prepared for the OECD Global Science Forum on "Mathematics in Industry." The report was prepared by a working group of 60 experts representing the industrial, academic and government communities of 18 member states of the OECD and Russia, who met in Heidelberg, Germany, in April 2007. The main objectives of the activity were

  • to survey the state of the art of mathematics in industry in the participating countries, and to identify and analyze the most important challenges;
  • to formulate a set of standards for mathematical research, education and funding, and to identify the structural changes necessary to improve the transfer of mathematics to industry;
  • to promote the application of mathematical technology in industry; and
  • to coordinate or initiate national programs and plan international cooperations.

The report, which summarizes the discussion and recommendations of the working group, will be distributed to the governments and funding agencies of all OECD member states to raise the awareness and enhance the profile of mathematics in the industrial context. The panel will explain the motivation for the report and discuss the main findings
