Heinz Hopf Prize and Lectures

Heinz Hopf Prize 2013

The Heinz Hopf Prize at ETH Zurich is established based on a donation made by Dorothee and Alfred Aeppli and is awarded for outstanding scientific work in the field of pure mathematics. The Prize amount is CHF 30'000.-. The Prize is awarded every two years on the occasion of the Heinz Hopf Lectures, which already have a tradition at ETH. The Lectures are given by the prize winner.

Laureate 2011

The Heinz Hopf Prize 2011 has been awarded to Michael Rapoport (University of Bonn, Germany).

The award ceremony for the Heinz Hopf Prize 2011 took place on October 25, 2011 at 6 pm in HG G60 (Aula); the prize was presented by Prof. Dr. Ralph Eichler, President of ETH Zurich and the laudatio was given by Prof. Dr. Gerd Faltings (MPI Bonn). The Heinz Hopf Lectures entitled HOW GEOMETRY MEETS ARITHMETIC were held on October 25 and 27, 2011 in HG G60 (Aula) at 5 pm. Moreover, there was a Symposium on October 26, 2011 in HG D7.2 in honor of this year's prize winner including the following speakers: Ngô Bao Châu (University of Chicago), Stephen Kudla (University of Toronto), and Guy Henniart (Université Paris-Sud 11).

Statutes

The Statutes of the Heinz Hopf Prize have been approved by the president of ETH on May 20, 2008 and subsequently be published in the Rechtssammlung of ETH Zurich under No. RSETHZ 211.810.83; see here for the published documents (english, german). The responsibility for the Prize lies with the Heinz Hopf Prize Committee and the Heinz Hopf Prize Board.

Nominations

Everybody is welcome to submit nominations for the Heinz Hopf Prize. Nominations are confidential and should not be made known to the nominee. Self-nominations are not acceptable and deceased persons cannot be nominated.

A nomination should be submitted by no later than Nov. 15 to be considered a nomination for the following year. Candidates are nominated by using the online submission form.
