Bachelor of Science ETH in Mathematics

Prerequisites for admission to the Bachelor programmme

Owners of a federally approved Matura or a Pasarelle Matura can enter the first semester without having to take an exam.

Scope and length

The bachelor program starts in the fall semester and usually lasts three years. The maximum duration of study is five years. In order to finish a bachelor degree students have to obtain 180 credit points.

Language

The lectures of the base year are all held in German. In the second and third year some lectures may be held in English.

First year exam and performance assessment

The first year is completed by an examination. The material of the second year is examined in two blocks. In the third year performance assessments may include, apart from oral exams, written reports and papers as well as talks.

Credit points

In accordance with European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) regulations the programme is credit-based. For details as how this is implemented see the following guidelines guidelines (PDF 38 KB).

Switch after the base year

Students in the bachelor programms of mathematics and physics may switch to the other programme without any additional requirements after completing the base year, or change to the Bachelor-Programme in Computer Science and Engineering.

Semester as a visiting student

After successfully completing the base year students in the bachelor program may spend one or two semesters as a visiting student in another University. In the D-MATH exists a student exchange office.

Admission to the Master's programme

The Bachelor degree in mathematics allows students to start the Master's programme in Mathematics at ETH Zurich or the University of Zurich without any additional requirements.

Didactic education

As part of further studies, it is possible to complete a didactic training for mathematics. These additional studies may already be initiated during the bachelor's degree, but usually not before having acquired 110 credit points.

Expenditure of time

Since studying at ETH Zurich is a full time occupation, the possibility of working during the studies is very limited, especially in the base year. After successfully completing the first year, it is possible to be employed as a Hilfsassistent or –assistentin in charge of exercise groups.
