The management of financial risks as well as the appropriate handling
of modern financial instruments (options, futures or swaps) is an
important task within each company. The basis for a sound management is
a good understanding of the models and techniques used in Finance.
Financial Mathematics draws from the disciplines of probability
theory, statistics, scientific computing and partial
differential equations to provide models and derive relationships
between fundamental variables such as asset prices, market movements
and
interest rates. These mathematical tools allow us to draw conclusions
that can be otherwise difficult to find or not immediately obvious from
intuition.
The ETH Zürich considers Financial Mathematics as one of its key
subjects in education and research. The main goal of the education
programme is to provide students with a sound understanding of the
modern techniques and theories from Mathematical Finance which are used
in financial institutions. The courses cover questions such as the
pricing of derivatives, risk management or portfolio optimization.
Below, you find a list of currently offered courses in Financial
Mathematics. As a prerequisite, we strongly recommend the course Probability
Theory (Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie), which is usually
taught in German. Furthermore, there are several interesting
stochastics
courses on related topics which are offered on a regular basis such as Applied
Stochastic Processes, Extreme Value Theory, Time
Series Analysis, Regression,Mathematical
Statistics, Multivariate Statistics and
there
is an extensive list for the education in Insurance
Mathematics. Every semester a Research Seminar on
Finance and Insurance Mathematics and Students'
Seminars are offered.
